The smallest continent Australia, famously called Down Under, has been one of the most sought after hunting grounds among backpackers. Despite the distance, backpackers throng to this beautiful and vast continent that offers countless opportunities for whole community of backpackers.
I have been to a few of the places there and I must tell you the experience they had and the memories backpackers left with were the ones they’ll cherish for ever. What’s more there was equal and unparallel enthusiasm among the first time as well as veterans of backpacking that I met there.
You can go to any of the cities and find lots of opportunities there. One thing noticeable about Australia is the less number of cities compared to its size. Because of that all the cities are well developed and connected and you have plenty of destinations to keep you occupied. You can explore the Eastern part by visiting Cairns, Sydney, Canberra (the capital) and Brisbane. All these places are too good to be missed. The other places you can visit are the island of Tasmania and the beautiful city of Perth on the Western coast.
There are certain specific places that are not exactly within these cities but are only better and beautiful. One of the most popular spots and not just in Australia is Ayers/Uluru rock. It is a geographical feature that is sacred to the aboriginals of Australia. My advice is you must squeeze this one into your itinerary at any cost.
Byron Bay and Surfers Paradise are must visits too. The latter definitely lives up to its name. If you like wildlife then you can’t miss Kakadu Natinal Park, the Grampians and Daintree Rain Forrest. Everyone loves Kangaroos, like the Schleich Kangaroo action figure, not to mention amazing Koalas, Platypuses, and Emus; all of which are found in abundance in Australia. If it’s the tracking you like, go to Cradler Mountain, the starting point of the magnificent five day walk on the Overland Track.
The continent is so huge that you can have all kinds of experiences here. To enjoy the wine-yards you can visit Barossa valley in South Australia. And if it’s the islands and the beaches you prefer, Phillip Island is the place for you.
But the most spectacular and inviting destination in the whole of Australia is the Great Barrier Reef that runs through almost half of Eastern coast. The beautiful and colourful coral reefs are such a sight that you won’t believe your eyes.
The whole continent is so tempting that just the mere mention of it brings back so many happy memories. And I am telling all the backpackers, you have to visit it once. As for me, I can’t wait to be there again and again.
