It is almost impossible these days to travel without getting stuck at an airport or at least chasing a plane to get you to your dream destination. In that regards it is important to be prepared for a few travel basics in order to enjoy a safe and relaxed flight.

At first, you should make sure to buy your plane ticket as early as possible to your departure date in order to get the lowest airfare possible. It is wise to use price comparison sites and actually compare different airlines since they differ in their prices a lot. When you book a flight, try to go for mid-weekdays as they tend to be the cheapest available tickets. Also call the airline ahead and ask them about the luggage allowance. You don’t want to end up paying excess luggage charges.

Health

If you suffer from any illnesses, check with your airline if you are allowed to bring your medication and / or syringes on board. If you or someone in your family is suffering from DVT, talk to your practitioner before boarding a plane. The risk of developing a blood clot during long haul air travel can be quiet significant and you should be prepared for that with medication and frequently getting up during your flight and move your legs as regularly as possible. This might also help you when your legs swell up. Also make sure to drink plenty since dehydration is a common problem in the dry air of planes.

Jet Lag

Everyone who ever took a long distance flight over several times zones knows how paralysing Jet Lag can feel. Your inner body clock is out of sync with your destination’s local time and it may take up to a few days to adjust to the new time zone. Unfortunately, there is not much you can do other than trying to follow the local time and stay awake even if your inner clock tells you it’s way past bedtime.

Choose your airports wisely

I realize that you cannot always choose your dream airport and it may depend the price to a large extend but sometimes it pays off to travel through nice airports. Especially when you have a long stop over scheduled between connecting flights or an early morning flight where you might consider sleeping at the airport in order to save some bucks.

Regularly, the best and worst airports worldwide are being selected in various polls. And although the results do differ, Singapore’s Changi airport is always up there. You don’t want to go back to some dodgy hostel anymore after having enjoyed free internet, snooze chairs with massages, prayer rooms and much more.
